What is a Study Buddy?
A large component of English classes at Grace is utilizing technology to speak with native English speakers from the United States. These volunteers are called “Study Buddies” and include not only volunteers but also incorporate classrooms from the United States that allow students from the two countries to meet each other online to practice basic conversations and to build ongoing international relationships. These connections allow our students to learn not only English but also culture!
All smiles during a study buddy session!
Why be a Study Buddy?
If you ask any of our students, their favorite part is connecting with study buddies! We operate on a very flexible schedule which allows our volunteers to commit as much or little time as they want! It is a great way for individuals or classrooms to learn about other cultures and help students here in Guatemala obtain more opportunities in school or in the workforce later on. From the comfort of your own home, you can help make a difference in our students’ lives!
How Can You Help?
We connect with our study buddies through Facetime, Skype, and Google Hangout. Our volunteers connect anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours from their homes, offices, or schools. There are two sessions of class Monday- Saturday from 10:30am-1pm EST or 4:30pm-6:30pm EST. GES students are looking forward to connecting with you! Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information or to sign up today!
The Before and After English Study Buddy school program at GES has increased in the number of students since January of 2017. Currently, there are 97 students enrolled with about 20 more waiting to enter the program. The ages of the students vary from 7-40 years old. The wide age difference of the students has allowed us to get to know the community through the people. The objective of this program is to continue to provide an all native English environment to the students to assure the practice and perfection of their English conversation. Having an 80 percent of proficiency in the English language will allow many of these students an opportunity to a better paying job and future profession. GES’s goal is to continue to work with many of these students until they are able to obtain a career utilizing their language skills.
